Coloration can be caused by a number of different impurities, which have different color intensities. The color cannot, therefore, be used to reliably tell anything about purity.

100% pure MDMA hydrochloride is a white powder or translucent crystal, but impurities are often deliberately left in because it's easy for a street dealer to find a white powder to substitute another white powder with. In contrast, one of the most common impurities is brown with a distinctive odor.
